Two foundations in Puerto Rico, Grupo Guayacán and Foundation for Puerto Rico, were picked by the Airbnb’s Community Fund, a program aimed at supporting programs to educate and develop entrepreneurs.

In 2020 the Airbnb Community Fund was created with the intention of strengthening communities around the world by investing $100 million dollars by the end of 2030.

On Tuesday January 26, Airbnb donated a total of $10 million to more than 120 nonprofits globally. Over 25 non-profit organizations in Latin America received grants across 13 countries in the region this year.

“For the past four years our organization has been working in the eastern region of Puerto Rico, engaging with the community and local stakeholders to develop initiatives that will create a transformational economic impact for all in the area. Now, thanks to the support of Airbnb, we will not only continue these efforts but also amplify them. Funding, like the one provided by Airbnb, allows us to fill operational gaps during the implementation of our crucial projects,” said Alma Frontera, vice president of operations and programs at Foundation for Puerto Rico, which received $100,000.

Simultaneously, Grupo Guayacán received $50,000 for programs aimed at developing, strengthening, and advancing the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Puerto Rico.

“As a mission-driven organization, Grupo Guayacán is committed to generating socioeconomic impact for Puerto Rico. The entrepreneurs we support are our driving force. During our 28-year history, our organization has created and offered a portfolio of global programs that provide educational and business resources to help local entrepreneurs in different stages build their ventures and generate socioeconomic impact for Puerto Rico.  We have worked with over 2,650 participants and 1,100 companies and awarded over $2.7M in seed capital to early-stage entrepreneurs,” said Laura Cantero, executive director of Grupo Guayacán.

“We are committed to creating a sustainable economic model where entrepreneurs can grow businesses, contributing to thriving and vibrant communities across the island. The Airbnb Community Fund grant will help us to expand this impact, and we look forward expanding our collaboration for years to come,” she added.

Last year’s Airbnb Community Fund recipient was the Ecoexploratorio: Museo de las Américas.

Utilizing the resources provided by the grant, EcoExploratorio Puerto Rico developed an educational tour on the island during peak months of the hurricane season in the commercial areas, and hosted a solar eclipse event to watch the eclipse with protective glasses and provide educational materials on hurricanes.

“At Airbnb, it is an honor to continue for the second consecutive year, the focus on local entities. Together, we will continue working to protect biodiversity and support communities in need. Additionally, we aim to connect the Host and Guest community with sustainability initiatives that can help safeguard our planet. We are thrilled to add the resilience of tourism as a significant component of sustainability through our efforts. We trust that these donations will support local communities in preserving Puerto Rico’s natural heritage for future generations and promote tourism entrepreneurship,” said María Cuba, director of Community Partnerships at Airbnb.

“Through these initiatives, Airbnb continues to invest in the communities where the company has a presence, empowering Hosts and supporting causes that matter most to stakeholders. Airbnb looks forward to continuing this work in the years to come,” the company stated in a press release.
